Marine Offshore and Shipbuilding

Marine & Shipbuilding

Oil and gas production in the offshore industry remains at a high level, and shipbuilding is more complex than ever. Hexagon PPM engineering solutions help create the most productive, efficient and safe environment for the offshore, and shipbuilding industries.

Marine engineering must deal with many obstacles: physical space constraints, extreme weather conditions, deep water, and remote locations. These constraints create an extreme environment for the engineer to develop a sound, reliable, and safe operating platform. Integration of hull and plant designs is another difficulty for the engineer to overcome. After an offshore facility is turned over to operations, the challenges do not become any easier. Maintaining and operating in a safe environment with access to accurate and reliable data to make informed decisions is critical to improving uptime.

3D Design & Visualization

Oil and gas production in the offshore industry is still at very high levels. More complex developments in shipbuilding are being awarded. The demands to extract and process oil and gas from new oil fields offshore has led to a major shift in the technologies chosen for the design and operation of floating production facilities used to both extract and process crude oil and natural gas products. With all of these projects, space is a major constraint, so configuring the process in as small an area as possible is critical to success. Intergraph Smart™ 3D is a ship design software that provides a next-generation, fully integrated design and manufacturing environment to support the design of both conventional offshore platforms (fixed, jackups, SSBs, drillships, TLPs, and spars) as well as FPSO, floating LNG, and other marine vessels. Smart 3D can efficiently process the dense and complex structural and outfitting designs that meet industry requirements.

At ship and offshore yards, assembling, lifting, and moving around big blocks and modules requires many activities that have to be planned mostly in advance to avoid costly idle time during fabrication and to ensure workers safety on the shop floor. There are hundreds of documents and drawings that have to be prepared in order to instruct the crews on the right operating sequence to accomplish their job in the most safe and productive way.

Intergraph Smart® LPM provides a comprehensive set of tools and functionalities to be used on top of the 3D model design to prepare all the necessary deliverables to be used at the yard for assemblies and blocks painting, scaffolding installation and removal, lifting lugs positioning, cranes configuration and much more.

Intergraph Smart® LPM can import several different formats of CAD 3D models, and for this reason it’s a great tool for the production engineering office at the yard, independently by the 3D CAD systems that is used by the design office

Ship piping design, and particularly floating production, storage, and offloading vessel piping, requires rugged installations that can withstand the hull/platform movement associated with wave loads. These analyses involve the consideration of volumes of data that may be overwhelming due to ever-changing boundary conditions. Hexagon PPM analysis solutions provide integrated tools that provide opportunities to improve change management and the iterative information flow that takes place in analyzing and designing these maritime vessels.

Our solutions use codes and standards specific to the offshore industry, including DNV (Norwegian offshore), ASME B31.8 (offshore pipeline systems for gas transmission), B31.4 Chapter IX (offshore pipeline systems for liquid hydrocarbons), UKOOA (UK offshore), PD 8010 Part 2 (subsea pipelines), and CSA Z662 Chapter 11 (Canadian offshore). The application of these codes, and others, help ensure your facilities and installations are engineered and designed to the world’s highest standards.

Asset Lifecycle Information Management

Engineering, assembling, and operating in challenging environments offshore means quick access to data is required. Resources “on the beach” can be challenged by time, distance, and communication channels. Hexagon PPM Asset Lifecycle Information Management solutions ensure data integrity and information immediacy to support critical decisions when minutes count.

Engineering & Schematics

In the early design stages of a marine project, cable schedules, instrumentation information, and P&IDs must be designed. Hexagon PPM’s suite of engineering and schematics tools, such as SmartPlant® P&ID, enables engineers to create several design scenarios. The product uses customizable rules to drive design consistency. In addition, SmartPlant P&ID provides access to external data sources, such as pipe specifications, to ensure designs can be built effectively and efficiently. The control system and electrical solution (via SmartPlant Electrical and SmartPlant Instrumentation) provide tools to make sure that the vessel has its safety and backup systems in place. The design can constantly be evaluated for safety and HAZOP studies using SmartPlant Process Safety.

Procurement, Fabrication & Construction

For a typical new marine, offshore, and shipbuilding facility, 10 to 15 percent of the total cost goes toward engineering design while 50 to 60 percent of the cost is related to material. Surplus materials caused by ineffective materials management, even to levels of only five percent, can result in the loss of millions of dollars on an average capital project. Without continuous management of materials, it is difficult to take the appropriate corrective action to prevent schedule delays, material overspend, and increased logistics costs. Delays can often be even more costly when they affect the owner and operator’s ability to produce and sell the product. Effectively managing this essential business process in an integrated environment throughout all phases of the project life cycle is vital to reducing cost and delays.
